Watch as Hydrogen Peroxide mixes with Potassium Permanganate, soap, and color! A massive foam volcano erupts. Then, we hold a glowing joss stick near the foam to see it relight because of Oxygen (O2)!
Focus: Sensory observation. Looking at the fast-growing foam. Feeling the heat safely (Exothermic).
Focus: Understanding that mixing two liquids can create a gas. Watching the joss stick glow brighter.

Understanding of the Oxygen Test (Joss stick relighting):
Mix vinegar (acid) and baking soda (base) to create invisible Carbon Dioxide (CO2). We will "pour" this invisible gas over a candle flame and watch it instantly go out!
Focus: Listening to the fizzing bubbles and blowing "magic air" to put out the candle.
Focus: Learning that gases can be heavy. We can pour CO2 just like water.
Focus: Acid/Base reactions. Density of CO2 vs. Ambient Air, and the Fire Triangle (removing oxygen).
Could the student explain why the candle went out?
Wrap aluminum foil around stones to make them sink. Add dishwash, color, and Caustic Soda (NaOH). The reaction produces Hydrogen gas bubbles that float. Carefully frame the bubbles and ignite them with a flame to hear a "POP"!
Focus: Observing the sinking stones and the chemical creation of a highly flammable gas. Safe observation of the combustion "POP".
Focus: Chemical formula generation (Aluminum + NaOH + Water). Discussing the flammability of Hydrogen vs Oxygen vs CO2.
Observation of gas properties (flammability):
Mix cornstarch and water. When you punch it hard, it turns into a solid. When you touch it gently, it melts like a liquid! Is it magic? No, it's a Non-Newtonian Fluid!
Focus: Sensory play! Getting hands messy, squeezing hard, and letting it drip.
Focus: Experimenting with pressure. Rolling it into a ball quickly, then stopping to watch it melt.
Focus: Viscosity and shear stress. Discussing Sir Isaac Newton's laws of fluids.
Willingness to engage in sensory play:
Cut open a clean diaper (Pampers) to extract the secret powder: Sodium Polyacrylate! Add water and watch it instantly absorb 300 times its weight in water to create fake snow.
Focus: Watching the tiny powder grow into a mountain of fluffy snow. Spatial
Focus: Discussing where we use absorbent materials in real life (agriculture, diapers, cooling pads).
Focus: Superabsorbent polymers (SAP). Osmosis and measuring the mass-to-volume ratio.
Fascination with polymer expansion:
Place a lit candle in a plate of colored water. Cover the candle with an upside-down glass. As the flame uses up the oxygen and the temperature drops, watch the colored water magically rise into the glass!
Focus: Watching the colored water defy gravity and move UP! Spatial
Focus: Understanding that the flame needs air (oxygen) to survive, and it "drinks" the water when it dies.
Focus: Charles's Law & Boyle's Law. The cooling of gases creates a pressure difference (partial vacuum) pushing the water up.
Understanding of Pressure vs Vacuum:
Place colored water in cups and connect them using folded toilet paper. Over time, the colored water "walks" up the paper bridges and mixes in empty cups to form a rainbow!
Focus: Color mixing! Watching Red and Yellow make Orange. Spatial
Focus: Learning how water can travel UP against gravity, just like water travels up tree trunks!
Focus: Adhesion and Cohesion forces creating Capillary Action. Plant biology and xylem vessels.
Patience and Observation Skills:
Drop food coloring onto a plate of milk. Touch the milk with a cotton swab dipped in dish soap. Watch the colors instantly dance, burst, and swirl around the plate!
Focus: Dropping the colors and being amazed by the sudden explosion of swirls. Spatial
Focus: Learning that the soap is chasing the fat molecules in the milk to attach to them.
Focus: Surface tension disruption. Hydrophobic and hydrophilic ends of soap molecules.
